| The
standard-bearers among hallmarkers are the English,
who have carefully marked their gold and silver
since about 1,300. Early hallmarks were punched
by Britain's Goldsmiths Hall (hence the phrase "harll
mark"). They were also called "touchmarks",
because those who were given the right to affix
hallmarks were said to have "the power of touch".
